How can you listen
When he struggles to find a word
When his topics shift
Like grains of sand on a snow white beach?

I just listen.

Why don’t you just get up
When he interrupts
Waves his hands
When he won’t let you finish, even one sentence?

Because it matters.

What are you thinking
When others move away
Make excuses
Dishes need washing, got to check the kids?

Someday I will need someone to stay.

When will you get tired
Of hearing his stories
His memories of long ago
And places and people who no longer exist?

Never.
